American prisoners known to be alive and in North Korean and Chinese hands at the end of the Korean War were not returned. Neither were a larger number of South Korean prisoners, America’s allies in that war.

The question this section examines is whether Americans were kept in the same way, and what became of them.
- Americans in North Korea — the assembled declassified reporting and firsthand testimony, from a former North Korean policeman who says he shared a beer with the men, to a Romanian engineer who locked eyes with one of them from a bus.
